Free Marketo Tips and Tricks

Marketo can be intimidating at first. It’s large and built for enterprise companies. Though it’s better described as difficult to learn, you will learn to love it, simply because its flexible enough to do whatever you dream up in the marketing automation world. Not only can you build intricate drip campaigns, nurtures, email automation and testing systems, and landing pages, but Marketo’s backbone is in its Smart Campaigns. Smart Campaigns are what makes Marketo’s automation work and are in every part of the system. You use these campaigns to make both production and operational programs run. They can be retroactive or only apply to future actions. Marketo also has a comprehensive set of reports for your digital marketing needs. Marketo Certified Expert Practice Exam

I passed my Marketo Certified Expert exam in three weeks. Below are what I find are the best resources for learning Marketo for marketing automation:

  1. Marketo Docs: I probably read most of their product documents. They outline every feature very well and include screen shots and related reads.
  2. Marketo Webinars: When I needed something more visual, I turned to Marketo’s upcoming & on-demand webinars. Use these videos to view topics in more details outside of the Marketo Docs. My favorite ones are creating Engagement Programs (Nurtures and Drip Campaigns), creating and optimizing email programs, and the webinars about tokens (Marketo allows you to use variables to reference everything. You can even make up your own variables!).
  3. Marketo Training Videos: Marketo also has a hub for their training videos. These videos are more basic, but is good for a first glance at how the system works and to brush up on your marketing automation fundamentals and best practices.
  4. Marketing Rockstar Guides: Created by Josh Hill, a long time certified expert, this website has both amazing summaries and in-depth looks at popular marketing automation topics. I read Josh’s articles and presentations to better understand complex topics such as attribution and reporting.
  5. Marketo Nation: Marketo Nation is a community of users and partners to discuss best practices. When I couldn’t find an answer in the resources above or had a difficult time wrapping my mind around a certain topic, I would ask the community and usually received a response in less than one day.
